When Caleb and Emma Wiese started to plan their fifth birthday with their parents, they decided they didn’t really need any more toys. The Nampa twins, with parents Katie and Rick, hit on the idea of asking for donations to The Idaho Foodbank.
They invited a few friends for the Jan. 31 party, and then spread the word of their plan. They told relatives, friends at church, the staff at Desert Springs Elementary in the Vallivue District where both parents work, and on Facebook.
“We thought we’d have a few sacks of groceries, but the whole thing got bigger than we ever imagined,” said Rick.
The result was 483 pounds of food and $120 cash, enough for 760 meals.
Their donation caught the eye of Maggie O’Mara at KTVB Channel 7 in Boise. She accompanied the Wiese family to the Foodbank and will feature them on “Seven’s Heroes.” (The segment aired Sunday, Feb. 24, during the 10 p.m. news.)
Neither twin was very talkative while surrounded by strangers and a TV camera, but Katie says they understand they have helped people who need it.
“Emma said, ‘They probably don’t have beds, either. Maybe we should do something with our beds,’” Katie said.
And the party didn’t turn out too badly. The Cat in the Hat came by to read stories, and everyone dined on Thing One and Thing Two cupcakes.
