On Friday, Feb. 1, a group of intrepid theatrical volunteers began to write, rehearse and produce a series of original one-act plays – within 24 hours. The results were presented on Saturday, Feb. 2, at Boise Little Theater. All proceeds benefited The Idaho Foodbank.
This was the fourth year Daisy’s Madhouse theater company has staged Will Act 4 Food: a 24-Hour Play Festival. The event is guerrilla theater at its best – a high-wire act of artistic thrills and occasional spills but all for a good cause.
Each year the writers are randomly assigned genres – drama, tragedy, comedy, farce, absurdist, suspense and adaptation. They are each given a line and a prop they must use within their 10-minute one-act play. The next morning, directors and casts are chosen at random for each play, and rehearsals begin. Showtime is 12 hours later.
Everyone pays to participate – the audience, writers, directors and actors pay $15 each to be part of Will Act 4 Food. Terry Allen and India Allen even wrote their play, “Food Fight,” from Kentucky.
The event earned $3,492.46, the second-highest total of its four-year run. That is enough to provide more than 10,000 meals.
Here are the details of this year’s event. There were awards given out – and they are noted below – but everyone involved was a winner in our books.
A deep bow to host Ken Bass and everyone else involved this year, especially Aimee Nell Smith and Jennifer Dunn who did so much to put Will Act on its feet again this year.
