Cooking Matters Volunteer Opportunities

In order to operate Cooking Matters successfully, we rely on volunteers which allows us to expand the program throughout the state. Our volunteers help us with duties ranging from shopping for groceries to teaching classes, and everything in between!

Below are descriptions of the primary volunteer positions. If you would like to get involved with Cooking Matters, please submit a volunteer application today!

All Cooking Matters volunteers must attend a 3-hour orientation before becoming a program volunteer. Other requirements, listed below, vary depending on the volunteer position.

Culinary Instructor:  Commit 3 hours each week for 6 weeks.  Show off your skills.  Talk about food.  Empower families.  Change someone’s life.  We make it easy and provide all of the tools you need.

Requirements (at least one of the following):

    • 2-year culinary arts degree
    • 2 years working as a chef or sous chef
    • Completion of The Idaho Foodbank’s Cooking Matters training program

Nutrition Instructor:  Commit 3 hours each week for 6 weeks.  Show off your skills.  Talk about food.  Empower families.  Change someone’s life.  We make it easy and provide all of the tools you need.

Requirements (at least one of the following):

    • 4-year degree in the fields of dietetics, family and consumer sciences, nutrition, or food science.
    • 4-year degree in the fields of education, nursing or kinesiology with a minimum of 12 credit hours of nutrition classes.
    • Completion of The Idaho Foodbank’s Nutrition Instructor training program.

Classroom Manager:  Commit 4 hours each week for 6 weeks.  Show off your skills.  Talk about food.  Empower families.  Change someone’s life.  We make it easy and provide all of the tools you need.

Requirements:

    • Well organized, critical thinker, detail oriented, good communicator.  Professional teaching or training experience is a plus!
    • Completion of The Idaho Foodbank’s Cooking Matters training program.

Class Shopper:  Commit 2-3 hours each week for 6 weeks.  Shop for, package, and deliver groceries to class locations.

Requirements:

    • A great bargain shopper!  A good home cook with knowledge of a wide variety of foods and their uses in the kitchen.  Able to “think on your feet”.  Must be 18 years or older and successfully pass a background check.
    • Completion of The Idaho Foodbank’s Cooking Matters training program

Laundry Assistant:  Commit 2-3 hours per month.  Pick up, wash, fold, and deliver laundry.

Requirements:

    • Access to transportation and equipment and physical capability to clean and transport laundry. Ability to safely lift and carry up to 30 pounds.

Office Assistant:  Commit 1-2 hours each week. Assist with paperwork processing in an administrative office setting.

Requirements:

    • Well organized, detail oriented, good communicator.  Proficient with standard office equipment and Microsoft programs.
