A Recipe to Celebrate Dairy Month

Many people fondly remember the iconic phrase “Got Milk?” This slogan was part of an ad campaign that promoted milk consumption across the United States. The dairy food group has consistently been highlighted in nutritional guidelines, from the historical MyPyramid to the current MyPlate, as well as the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. These resources offer evidence-based food and nutrition recommendations for the general population, emphasizing the importance of dairy in a balanced diet.

Dairy can be part of balanced diet, containing up to 13 essential nutrients that “do a body good”. Milk is a rich source of calcium and protein, which are crucial for bone and muscle function as well as heart health. It also contains Vitamin B2 (riboflavin) which is important for cell growth and energy production. Other nutrients found in milk include potassium and phosphorus, which help maintain normal functions of the body. These nutrients are very important in managing hearth health, however, some of them may be restricted for individuals with kidney disease. Since the 1930’s, milk has been fortified with Vitamin D to help prevent rickets, as there are very few foods that naturally contain vitamin D.

The National Dairy Council is committed to ending hunger through providing easier access to dairy products. They work with foodbanks across the country, including The Idaho Foodbank, to reach neighbors who are food insecure.

Milk allergy is one of the most common food allergies in children. It should be addressed by a physician or dietitian to ensure that the nutrients found in dairy are obtained from other foods or supplements. Lactose intolerance, a gastrointestinal disorder often confused with a milk allergy, can also be a barrier to consuming the recommended amount of dairy. Greek yogurt, which is one of the lowest lactose-containing dairy products, is also a good source of high-quality protein.
