American Heart Month

February marks American Heart Month, a nationwide reminder to care for our hearts and protect our long‑term health. Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States, affecting men, women, and people across most racial and ethnic groups.

At The Idaho Foodbank, we work together with organizations across our state to lift up our neighbors and find solutions to community health needs.   This includes hosting nutrition education classes across the state to educate and improve the health of the people we serve and the broader community.

The message of American Heart Month is one of empowerment. Many of the most effective ways to prevent high blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease are rooted in everyday habits:

  • Eat a heart‑healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and foods lower in sodium and saturated fat. Approaches like the DASH eating plan have been shown to help lower blood pressure.

  • Stay active, aiming for at least 150 minutes of moderate‑intensity exercise each week.

  • Avoid smoking, which significantly increases the risk of heart attack and stroke.

  • Maintain a healthy weight, which can reduce strain on the heart and blood vessels.

  • Limit alcohol, as excessive drinking can raise blood pressure.

  • Get enough sleep to support overall cardiovascular health.

  • Manage stress, which can contribute to elevated blood pressure over time.

We know that access to nutritious food is a cornerstone of long‑term health — including heart health. In Fiscal Year 2025, 84% of the food we distributed was considered nutritious, reflecting our commitment to providing food options that support the well‑being of our neighbors.

Fresh produce, whole grains, lean proteins, and low‑sodium pantry staples aren’t just ingredients; they’re tools for preventing chronic disease and helping families build healthier futures. By prioritizing nutritious foods in our distribution network, we’re helping Idahoans take meaningful steps toward reducing their risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke.

As we recognize American Heart Month, we’re proud to stand alongside health partners, community organizations, and supporters in strengthening the heart health of our state — one meal, one household, and one neighbor at a time.
