Community Support for Back to School Needs in Lewiston

The latest Map the Meal Gap report found that 19% of children in Nez Perce County are food insecure. Last month as students were preparing to go back to school, the Lewiston School District HUB organized a Back-to-School Fair to support children and families in the community.
The event included a variety of resource tables with information from public, private, and nonprofit organizations. CHAS mobile health unit offered immunizations and scheduling for dental and sports physicals appointments. There were also free haircuts, as well as a food cooking demonstration and produce mobile pantry from The Idaho Foodbank. Families were also able to learn about the resources available throughout the year at the Lewiston School District HUB and tour their food pantry and clothing closet. Equus, Tri-State Health, Valley Medical, and Snake River Clinic were also there to support students and families in the community.
The opportunities to support students who are back at school continues through The Idaho Foodbank’s partnership with LCCU. Through the end of September, members of LCCU will have the chance to make a donation to our Backpack Program when they visit the credit union. The Idaho Foodbank’s Backpack Program provides a bag of food with 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 2 dinners, and snacks for the weekend to kids who are food insecure. This bag fits right in the child’s backpack. Community support is vital to our Backpack Program to help kids facing hunger. Thank you to LCCU and their members for your support!
