Fourth Grade Foodbank Heroes

For the past 10 years, the fourth graders from Mrs. Downs’ class at Cornerstone Christian School have been doing something pretty amazing—they’ve been rolling up their sleeves and volunteering every month at The Idaho Foodbank’s Lewiston warehouse.

These pint-sized powerhouses are full of curiosity and compassion. They don’t just show up—they dive in and are eager to learn how food banking works and how they can help their neighbors in need. During the holidays, they organize their own food drive, and many of them keep volunteering even when school’s out.

Mrs. Downs has a superpower: teaching her students that volunteering is an invaluable part of supporting our community. They have learned a lot about food insecurity and volunteering has really shown them that not everyone is as fortunate as they are. They are also discovering that even kids can be heroes in their community.

They always sing fun songs, such as “Chicken Wing, Chicken Wing.” and brighten the day of The Idaho Foodbank staff and other volunteers. The students look forward to volunteering every month – and not just because they get candy after their shifts! They show genuine enthusiasm for their volunteer work. In April, they were honored with certificates of appreciation. Every visit from Mrs. Downs’ class is a reminder that the future is in good hands.
