Free Tax Filing Options & Supporting the Community
January is the time to start thinking about filing your taxes. We wanted to share some information about how you can help Idahoans who are food insecure when you file your taxes, as well as information about free tax preparation and filing options.
Idaho Food Bank Fund
When you file your taxes this year, consider donating to the Idaho Food Bank Fund. You can make this donation on line 40 of your state tax return. This allows taxpayers to designate a dollar amount donation for the Fund. Contributions to the Idaho Food Bank Fund provide community-based nonprofit groups with grants to increase their capacity to provide hunger relief services and/or nutrition education programs in Idaho.
The Idaho Food Bank Fund was established by the Idaho Legislature in 2009 and is administered by Catholic Charities of Idaho and The Idaho Foodbank. Learn more about the Idaho Food Bank Fund at idahofoodbankfund.org.
Free Direct File
IRS Direct File is a new tax filing tool that allows you to file your taxes online for free directly with the IRS. Idahoans can use Direct File if your tax situation from 2024 was relatively straightforward.
For example, if you don’t itemize your deductions, your income came primarily from W-2 employment, and you claim common tax credits like the CTC (Child Tax Credit), EITC (Earned Income Tax Credit), or premium tax credit, you’re likely eligible for DirectFile. Direct File has a screener tool where you can make sure you are eligible for Direct File before you start filing. Visit directfile.irs.gov to learn more about eligibility specifics.
Now, Idahoans can also file their state taxes for free. If you lived or earned money in multiple states, you cannot use Direct File this year.
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program
This program is available to taxpayers who make approximately $67,000 or less, people with disabilities, and those who speak limited English. You can learn more about VITA and find a location where qualifying individuals can get their taxes prepared on the IRS website.
Boise State University is operating VITA sites in the Treasure Valley and you can find more information on the BSU Department of Accountancy website.
Remember that your taxes need to be filed by April 15th!
