Innovative Partnerships with University of Idaho
University of Idaho (U of I) students in the Hydroponics club are working with the Lapwai Food Pantry to install a hydroponic green wall. Hydroponics is a method of growing plants without soil. Although the project was delayed because of the pandemic, the Lapwai Food Pantry is excited to have it all installed by the end of March. They will start with growing butter lettuce, which will be given to those who come to receive food from the pantry. If they are successful with the lettuce, the Lapwai Food Pantry will begin rotating in additional vegetables to the hydroponics wall. This is an innovative way to make fresh produce available to those in need. The U of I Hydroponics Club explores the art and science of growing plants without soil and has found a way to translate this interest into a benefit for the community.
