The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently launched its new MyPlate website to support healthier lifestyles for Americans. The site provides tools, resources and simple recipes to obtain the perfect balance of fruits, veggies, grains, protein and dairy in your daily diet.
During the last fiscal year, The Idaho Foodbank distributed food for over 18 million meals and 85% of that food was considered nutritious based on these USDA guidelines. It is important to note that this was achieved prior to the global pandemic. Regardless of the situation, The Idaho Foodbank is steadfastly committed to providing the people we serve with nutritious food and healthy options. Check out the new website at myplate.gov
The newly released Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2020-2025, provides information targeted to all ages for the first time in history. The guidelines include:
- Following a healthy dietary pattern at every life stage.
- Customizing and enjoying nutrient-dense food and beverage choices to reflect personal preferences, cultural traditions, and budgetary considerations.
- Focusing on meeting food group needs with nutrient-dense foods and beverages from five food groups – vegetables, fruits, grains, dairy and fortified soy alternatives, and proteins – and staying within calorie limits.
- Limiting foods and beverages higher in added sugars, saturated fat, and sodium, and limiting alcoholic beverages.
