March is National Nutrition Month®

National Nutrition Month was established by the American Dietetics Association in 1973. This year, we celebrate the many ways food connects us to our cultures, our families and our friends.
The Idaho Foodbank also uses food to nourish and empower the populations we serve. For instance, The Foodbank distributes nutritious food to communities in need. In addition, we provide culturally relevant foods to our neighbors, and we host nutrition and cooking classes to promote healthy eating.
The following are other ways that food connects and positively affects us. We hope that you will participate in one of these activities this month. Tag us on social media and let us know how it went!
Festivals and Celebrations
Festivals and celebrations around the world often center around food. For instance, in Mexican culture, Dia de Los Reyes (Three King’s Day) is commonly celebrated by making and consuming a sweet bread shaped into a wreath. These occasions provide an opportunity for people to reconnect with loved ones, honor cultural traditions, and create lasting memories.
Family Gatherings
Family meals are a cornerstone of many cultures. Whether it’s a weekly Sunday dinner, a holiday feast, or a simple weekday meal, these gatherings offer a chance for family members to bond, share their experiences, and support one another. There are also many health-related benefits to enjoying a regular family meal such as improved nutrition.
Food as a Cultural Exchange
In our increasingly globalized world, food has become a means of cultural exchange. Trying new cuisines allows us to experience different cultures and traditions. This exchange fosters understanding and respect among different communities.
Food’s ability to bring people together is incredible. It transcends cultural and geographical boundaries, fostering a sense of community and belonging. As we continue to navigate our increasingly diverse, modern world, it’s important to savor these moments of connection and celebrate the unifying power of food.
