North Central Spotlight: Empowering Seniors with Nutrition and Community

This spring, The Idaho Foodbank strengthened its outreach to older adults in North Central Idaho by sharing practical tools, nutrition education, and community connections at two Lewiston area events.

The Idaho Foodbank’s North Central Regional Director and Nutrition Education Manager  presented at the Our Financial Conference Event in Lewiston. Their session focused on food insecurity and the social determinants of health that affect seniors, especially those living on fixed incomes. They also shared grocery budgeting strategies and led an activity demonstrating how to create a balanced meal from a food box with items someone might typically find at a food pantry. This is a hands‑on way to show that nutritious eating can be both accessible and affordable.

At the end of May, The Idaho Foodbank was part of the annual Road Map to Aging Resource Luncheon, hosted by Community Action Partnership. The Foodbank team provided a variety of information, including healthy recipes, where neighbors in need can find food, volunteer opportunities, and legacy giving resources. The luncheon brought together organizations from across the region, offering seniors a welcoming space to connect, learn, and navigate the journey of aging. Participants were also able to enjoy a meal at the Lewiston Community Center Congregate Meal Site.

Across both events, the focus remained clear: supporting seniors with the knowledge, resources, and community connections that help them stay healthy, independent, and prepared for the future.
