Staff Spotlight — Shannon Ryals — Senior Accountant, Meridian

1. Before working at The Idaho Foodbank, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?

I had a part time job in high school making wool dusters used for cleaning. We were paid per piece so the faster we worked the more we were paid. I spent hours peeling hot glue off my fingers at the end of every night!

2. If you could switch your job with anyone else within The Idaho Foodbank, whose job would you want and why?

I enjoy working directly with the public and I sometimes miss having a customer-facing job where I interact with people in need. It’s tough work but also rewarding!

3. What is your WHY, why do you work at The Idaho Foodbank?

I like working in an environment where at the end of the day we all have the same mission– to support people in need. It’s about giving, helping, and supporting, and educating, and that feels good.

4. What was the most ridiculous impulse purchase you’ve ever made?

In my early 30’s I bought a convertible Volkswagen Cabrio on impulse. It was fun to drive but I didn’t keep it long because it wasn’t practical – my son’s lacrosse gear wouldn’t fit in the car!

5. What is your greatest personal achievement?

Raising my son is my greatest personal achievement. I was incredibly young when I had him and it wasn’t always easy. Being able to give him a solid foundation is my greatest personal achievement. He’s an amazing human being and I think instilling in him a love for education, kindness, and empathy helped him grow into the person he is today.

6. In your opinion, what is the most important invention in history?
