Providing food access across the entire state of Idaho is possible thanks to a strong network of partner food distribution organizations working to end hunger one community at a time. Use our Food Assistance Locator to find Mobile Pantries near you.
The USDA purchases a wide selection of products for TEFAP distribution. While the exact products available from year to year may change, the emphasis is always on food choices that promote variety and proper nutrition.
More than 150,000 people are facing food insecurity in Idaho– the lack of access at times to enough food to support a healthy and active lifestyle (Feeding America’s Map the Meal Gap study). This represents nearly 9% of the state’s population, and includes more than 46,000 kids. For this many Idahoans to not get enough to eat is a major problem by itself, and its effects extend well beyond that.
In 2017, the Food Resource Action Center (FRAC) released a literature review of the health implications of hunger, and it is bleak.
Children with food insecurity are at higher risk of numerous conditions, including asthma, development delays, iron deficiency anemia, mental health problems, poor academic outcomes, and generalized lower health status. Adults’ elevated risks include Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), hypertension, obesity, and stroke. Seniors with food insecurity have higher rates of asthma, depression, and congestive heart failure.
These health risks impact people and communities across the state, and providing nutrition security helps address all of them.
We can help our neighbors by supporting their nutritional needs and providing families with access to additional resources live healthy lives and thrive.
