The COVID-19 pandemic has hit our elderly population hard. Early in the crisis the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that adults 65 years and older along with people living in nursing home or long-term care facilities were at higher risk to contract severe illness from COVID-19. Many national and local organizations stepped up immediately to support this vulnerable population in response to this prediction.

Through a grant provided by Chobani, LLC The Idaho Foodbank this week welcomed a new refrigerated food truck. The truck will be dedicated to serve South Central Idaho, including the Magic Valley, to provide greater access to nutritious food to assist families, children and seniors facing hunger.
Thursday morning the Custer County mobile food pantry held its local distribution in Challis, Idaho. The distribution was due to start at 11:30. However, they were set up early and prepared to go by 10:30. The food was completely disbursed by 11:10.
The Idaho Foodbank and its partner agencies across the state are considered an essential service and vital to providing food. Therefore we are exempt from Governor Little’s Statewide Stay-At-Home Order. Our facilities are open, and our volunteers are considered essential personnel.
The Idaho Foodbank partnered with the Idaho National Guard in April to build special food boxes destined for Idaho kids in need. Normally these youngsters would receive a special package of food every Friday as part of the Backpack Program. Due to school closures these kiddos were now cut off from this service which provides nutritious meals over the weekend to hungry students. Thanks to the aid of the Idaho National Guard, this program was executed and supersized. Over 1300 boxes containing 10 breakfasts, 10 lunches, 10 dinners and 10 snacks were packaged by soldiers for immediate delivery to kids throughout the Southwest region of Idaho. And for one solider this experience was particularly meaningful.
